We are seeking three (3) professionals to serve on the AFCPE Certification Council. The Certification Council is an integral part of AFCPE’s certification programs, helping to lead the association dedicated to furthering the field of personal financial counseling, coaching and education. Open spots must be filled by:
- (2) Members that represent stakeholder constituencies
- These individuals may be selected from stakeholder groups that may include academia, financial industry, government agency, military, private practitioner, or service to reflect the diversity of the community of interest.
- Constituency members must be an AFCPE member for a minimum of two (2) years; AFC certification is not a requirement.
- The constituency members are full, voting members of the Certification Council.
- (1) Public Member* (See definition of Public Member below. We encourage you, as a certified professional, to forward this message to a peer who DOES NOT work in the field, but who may have interest in serving in this capacity.)
By serving as a volunteer council member, you:
- Play a significant role in certification policy and procedures.
- Enhance the value of AFCPE certification for our professionals and consumers.
- Have access to up-to-date information about the challenges facing the profession.
- Get to exchange ideas and perspectives with a diverse group of volunteer leaders.
Applicants should possess:
- Career focus within the field of financial counseling, coaching or education
- Demonstrated leadership commitment and involvement with AFCPE
- Relevant expertise in the disciplines of organizational management.
- Availability to participate in, at minimum, 1 face-to-face and 3-5 conference call meetings each year.
- Positive leadership attributes, emotional intelligence, ability to work collaboratively and engage in appropriate debate and discussion when needed, and visionary and strategic drive.
- Demonstrated ability of new and innovative programs within their sphere of influence. Examples include, but are not limited to, incorporating strategy, leadership, future focus, risk taking and an entrepreneurial spirit.

*What is a Public Member?
The Council includes a Public Member appointed to represent the direct and indirect users of the services of AFCPE certificants, to broaden the perspective of the Council, and focus attention on consumer concerns as they relate to quality and effectiveness. The Public Member may be a professional, but should not have similar credentials to the certificants. The public member will meet the criteria established in the current National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) Standards for the Accreditation of Certification Programs. The NCCA recommends, but does not require, that the public member has at some time been a consumer of the certificants’ skills or services, or is someone who has a background in public advocacy. The public member must attest that:
- Neither I nor my immediate family are current or previous members of the profession encompassed by the certification programs of the certification organization.
- Neither I nor my immediate family are employers or an employee of individuals in the profession encompassed by the certification programs of the certification organization.
- Neither I nor my immediate family are employees of an individual certified by the certification organization or of an employer of individuals in the profession encompassed by the certification programs of the certification organization.
- Neither I nor my immediate family are employees of any certification organization.
- Neither I nor my immediate family are currently deriving more than 5% of our total income from the profession encompassed by the certification programs of the certification organization.
- Neither I nor my immediate family have derived in any of the five years preceding my appointment as a public member on the governing body more than 5% of our total income from the profession encompassed by the certification programs of the certification organization.
- Neither I nor my immediate family have worked for or provided contract services to the certification organization at any time during the five years preceding my appointment as a public member on the governing body.
The Public Member is a full, voting member of the Council and is expected to perform the same duties as those of all other voting Certification Council members.
