Position Description

  • Britepaths is seeking volunteer instructors to teach personal finance classes with the Financial Empowerment Center at South County in Alexandria, VA. These classes are held during the weekday daytime and evening hours, for 1 to 1 ½ hours at our partner locations around Fairfax County or virtually.
  • We have an immediate need for in-person Spanish speaking volunteers.
  • Britepaths, a Fairfax County non-profit, through the Financial Empowerment Center at South County, provides financial empowerment programs to low – moderately low-income adults and financial education to youth.

Roles/Responsibilities

The volunteer financial literacy instructor teaches classes on personal financial literacy topics. Typical

topics include; spending & savings plans, credit reports & scores, managing debt, employee pay &

benefits, basics of savings & investing, financial crisis budgeting, banking, and action items for financial

health. Britepaths or the FEC staff will provide support to the volunteer instructor by providing the

instructor with the class presentation and handouts, assist with classroom setup or virtual technology

support, available to assist instructor with prepping for class, and following up with the class

participants.

 

Time Commitment/Availability

  • – 1 – 2 hours (depending on length of class and location)
  • – Weekday business hours and weekday evening hours

Required Qualifications

  • – Knowledge of the fundamentals of personal finance
  • – Creating spending and savings plans
  • – Reading and analyzing credit reports and building credit
  • – Debt management and creating debt reduction plans
  • – Working knowledge of Zoom, break-out rooms, and screen sharing

Preferred Qualifications

  • – Experience in working with low to moderately-low income individuals and families.
  • – Spanish speaking
  • – Working knowledge of MS office suite and Google applications
  • – Teaching experience is a plus
