New financial preparedness program to aid those vulnerable to financial hardship post natural disaster
COLUMBUS, Ohio, Dec. 19, 2018 /PRNewswire/ — Following multiple historic disasters across the United States, and in preparation for future incidents, the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education® (AFCPE®) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have announced a joint partnership to help improve financial preparedness of individuals and families before a natural disaster. Effective immediately, the two organizations will work together to develop comprehensive training for financial professionals and aid in the financial preparedness of individuals across the country.
Using feedback and expertise from Accredited Financial Counselors® (AFC®), AFCPE® and FEMA will develop an emergency saving and financial curriculum for finance professionals to use with clients. From there, the two organizations will develop resources and tools that encourage people to financially prepare for disasters by saving for emergencies, maintaining adequate insurance for potential hazards, safeguarding critical documents, and more.
Once completed, the training will be available to financial professionals throughout the country. The goal is to educate and help prepare individuals and families who may otherwise not receive financial services and help them to prepare before disaster strikes.
“AFCPE financial counselors, coaches, and educators work with individuals and families in nonprofit organizations, higher education, banks and credit unions, the military, and in private practice. They recognize that a strong financial foundation is critical to financial preparedness, and that natural disasters don’t wait for you to be prepared before striking,” said Rebecca Wiggins, executive director of AFCPE®. “Through this important partnership, we hope to connect our highly trained financial professionals across the country to service those vulnerable to a natural disaster who may otherwise not receive assistance.”
Financial professionals can sign up for more information and services will be available nationwide. For more information about financial preparedness visit: www.Ready.gov/financial-preparedness.
