Reports and surveys indicate that many new investors interested in trading turn to social media and so-called “finfluencers” due to an imbalance of educational content from more reliable sources. Data also suggests that most digital asset related investment fraud begins on social media platforms. What are the questions new investors are asking and what do they need to know about financial risks – not only the market risks of speculative products, but the fundamentals of risk and reward, counterparty risk, and new risks like self-custody? How can risk education help them avoid fraud? And, how can financial educators compete with the barrage of YOLO, get-rich-quick, “no experience necessary” social media messages?

Panelists:

  • Toby Leah Bochan, managing editor, Learn at CoinDesk
  • Andrea Clark, AFC®, CFP® and owner of The Table Financial Planning
  • Shayla E. Moon, senior director, Housing & Economic Policy, National Urban League
  • Gerri Walsh, president, FINRA Investor Education Foundation
