The Heart of the Matter: Motivational Interviewing for Financial and Housing Stability

In a world where financial information is everywhere, the counselor’s value lies not in what they know but in their ability to unlock what the client already knows they need to do. The Heart of the Matter is a 60-minute session that reframes the counselor-client relationship.

Participants will learn to identify the emotional and psychological anchors, such as financial trauma and behavioral biases, that keep clients in cycles of instability. By mastering the Motivational Interviewing (MI Spirit and the OARS) framework, counselors will move from prescriptive “shoulding” to evocative, agency-building partnerships that drive an 82% follow-through rate compared to traditional advice.
