ABLE accounts are tax-advantaged savings and investment accounts designed to enable individuals with disabilities to save and pay for disability-related expenses.

Congressional legislation went into effect January 1st, 2026, that greatly expands eligibility for these accounts, extending the limiting age of onset of qualifying symptoms from 26 to 46. It is estimated that approximately 6 million more Americans (including up to 1 million veterans) are now eligible to open ABLE accounts.

ABLE accounts are not the only financial tool available for clients with disabilities, but they are one of the most versatile, enabling account holders to build savings without losing means-tested government benefits such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid. Plus, investment growth and withdrawals are tax-free if used for Qualified Disability Expenses (QDEs).

Come learn how ABLE accounts can fit into financial advice, counsel, or planning for your clients with disabilities.
