DESCRIPTION:Just Say No to Scams: Protecting Consumers and Communities from Fraud \nConsumers lost more than $12.5 billion to fraud in 2024\, a 25% increase from the previous year\, with identity theft and cyber-enabled scams continuing to rise nationwide. As part of Consumer Action’s decades-long work educating consumers to recognize and avoid fraud\, this in-person training equips community educators\, counselors\, and direct service providers with practical tools to help protect the communities they serve. \nThe training includes: \nAn introduction to the latest edition of Consumer Action’s “Just Say No to Scams” educational module\, a free resource featuring a multilingual consumer guide\, tip sheet\, and tools for conducting community education. \nA session on preventing and recovering from identity theft\, which often results from consumer fraud. \nA special guest presentation by Dr. Jennifer Lawrence\, DSW\, LICSW (FightCybercrime.org)\, focusing on supporting consumers affected by severe cybercrime (including romance and crypto fraud)\, addressing shame and stigma\, recognizing when someone is actively being scammed\, and identifying effective recovery resources. \nResources for staying informed about emerging fraud trends; and information on how nonprofit attendees may apply for a small community education stipend.
