To complete the Accredited Financial Counselor (AFC®) certification, candidates must obtain 1,000 hours of experience related to the AFC Core Competencies. Experience focused on business or corporate finance is not eligible.
There is a ten-year window for calculating experience hours: candidates may include hours from seven years preceding their AFC enrollment and have up to three years from enrollment to complete their certification.
Experience can be earned through full-time, part-time, remote, self-employed, or pro bono work. There are a number of ways to earn experience hours, please see the AFC Experience Guide for more details.
Take this short assessment to determine whether your experience is likely to qualify.
AFC Experience Self-Assessment
The Experience Self-Assessment is meant to aid you in understanding the AFC experience requirement. Results from the assessment do not guarantee experience submissions will be approved or denied. Experience must be verified through the Experience Verification Form or other documentation as outline in the Experience Guide.
