Bruce Brunson

Dr. Bruce Brunson is the Executive Director of Tidewater Community (TCC) College’s Center for Military and Veterans Education (CMVE). Established in 2011, the CMVE provides college-wide leadership, management, and coordination for programs and services specifically targeted to military-related students. Military-related students including active-duty service members, veterans, and family members comprise approximately 35% of TCC’ s total student population of over 40,000. The CMVE is designed to increase student success and provide quality, consolidated student services through counseling, advising, and student support services for credit, continuing education, certifications, and degrees. Dr. Brunson and his staff are dedicated to making military-related students employable in occupations that lead to economic security.

Dr. Brunson enlisted in the U.S Navy upon high school graduation and went on to attend the U.S. Naval Academy. He finished his military career as Commanding Officer and Professor of Naval Science with the Naval ROTC at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, retiring in 1995 as a Commander after 22 years of service as naval aviator. Dr. Brunson has a PhD from Texas Tech in Consumer Economics and Environmental Design with emphasis in Certified Financial Planner (CFP) programs. He has worked as an assistant professor in Family Financial Management, in the Department of Near Environments at Virginia Tech where he established and taught the CFP® education programs. He also spent 9 years as an Executive Director over all Military and Government Programs for Florida Community College at Jacksonville. He oversaw significant credit and non-credit programs including the Military Educational Institute and Institute for Financial Services, and distance learning credit and non-credit continuing education.

Prior to joining TCC, Dr. Brunson worked as a consultant for the Department of Defense, several major colleges, corporations, and non-profits in two areas of expertise: projects to expand personal finance education and assisting colleges to become truly military helpful. His work included establishing the Personal Finance and Transition Directive for the Office of The Secretary of Defense to oversee a large national project expanding personal finance education and support to service members and their families. During this time, he also was a visiting professor at Virginia Tech and Texas Tech University teaching graduate and undergraduate courses in personal finance.

In addition to his PhD, Dr. Brunson holds a M.S. in Computer and Information Technology and a M.B.A. from Webster University. He graduated in 1974 from the U.S. Naval Academy with B.S. in Operations Analysis.
